Put It In a Pot
Topic: Scrap Recovery

I moved on to another sunflower sheet of Dazzles and this time the plants are potted. I still kept coloring them - with the same three markers as I used before.

I like how the upper left snippet, which is actually scrollwork, resembles a garden of flowers. The vertical decorative strip is also a Dazzles.

Oooh, I Love a Little Side Step
Topic: Scrap Recovery

The card today looks remarkably like yesterday's. However, I grouped the sunflowers on the left corner instead of the right. I colored the blooms again, used the same corner flourish and stamped the sentiment.

I like the little snippet of music in the corner.

Color My World
Topic: Scrap Recovery

I continued on with the brown scraps and the brown sunflower Dazzles but moved on one step by coloring in the blooms with Distress markers.

That stamp has been working for me so far so I inked it up again for this card.

Scraps In Bloom
Topic: Scrap Recovery

For the next brown scrappy card I stayed with the brown Dazzles but moved on to a set of sunflowers.

The butterflies are Dazzles as well and I stamped the text.

Blocky Scraps
Topic: Scrap Recovery

Round two of the brown scraps - I used more scraps as blocks instead of all stripes.

Many of the new Dazzles I bought are brown instead of the usual silver, gold and black. What a perfect thing to have on hand for my brown scraps.

I used black ink to stamp the text on this card.

Paper Patchwork
Topic: Scrap Recovery

I gave up on using the table scraps for OWH sketch cards. The remainder of them I had sorted out had been cut down and used up until the bits were mostly too small to fit any of the sketches.

So I did a complete resort of the table scraps by color groups and used them to make scrappy backgrounds on card fronts. Then I went to my new stash of Dazzles (peel-off stickers) to decorate them.

Here's the first from the brown series - which is the largest color group. This one got decorated with a large gold feather sticker and a word sticker from the same sheet.

Now THAT'S the way to use up scraps!

Operation Write Home sketch 61 - reprise
Topic: Sketch Challenge

How strange - two sketches in a row that I had used before and made multiple versions of AND that I did in May 2011.

Even back then I wasn't good about following sketches to the letter but I did get the essence of the layout represented. Here is my favorite of the 15 or so I made:

Some of the nifty elements on this are the use of a border print paper for the floral, a wooden heart, and clear acrylic dots over the spots on the lower paper.

Operation Write Home sketch 60 - reprise
Topic: Sketch Challenge

OWH sketch 60 is one that I made LOTS of back in May 2011.

It really appealed to me and I did about 10 versions of it back then. This is my favorite:

The birds are from a calendar page, the background is a ColorMe sheet and the text is a clear sticker. All of the blocks are popped up on foam tape.

Gonna have a little fun with OWH sketch 59:

As soon as I saw this sketch I knew I wanted that large center panel to feature one of the new Dazzles stickers I got. I cut and spliced some papers to give the panel borders on all sides, negating the need to layer as the sketch shows. I made the background represent sky, landscape and grass.

The text stickers were on the same sheet as the bicycle.

Stylish, elegant, classy - all a good description of how I treated OWH sketch 58:

The first element I changed on this sketch was combining the two uprights into one large panel. I had already chosen a sheet of vellum floral stickers for this card and the sheet included an image of ribbon. I placed two of these on the upright panel to recreate the look of the original split.

I used more of the vellum stickers to create background paper. Then I selected some square silver peel-off stickers and placed them over some of the vellum flowers. When I trimmed away toe vellum from the outsides of the squares it was easy to remove the sticker backing and attach these directly to the pale lavender block.

The feature block is popped up on foam tape and includes a doodle border and a stamped sentiment.

Ooooh, here's a lovely layout on OWH sketch 57:

Umm, I can't possibly make it 'just' like that.

So first I rotated it 1/4 turn clockwise. I had the perfect circle element from one of the Dazzles sticker sheets but it wasn't large enough. So I made the 'hole' the size on the sketch and popped up all of the elements on foam tape. I think it kind of looks like a stained glass window now so I decided to add a scripture strip in the same color as that backing the circle.

I went back and added gold sticker trim around the text block to tie it in with the circle.

You'll be seeing spots before your eyes with OWH sketch 56:

And, yes, I followed the sketch again!

You don't see it on the photo but I had to splice the papers in a couple of areas to use these scraps for the sketch. I kept it pretty simple, using three papers from the same dotted collection. The light strip made the perfect foil for a little picket fence from my new collection of Dazzles stickers. I added a birdhouse and work stickers from the same sheet to wrap this all up.

I guess the question is, "How long can I make myself stick to the sketches?"

Topic: Sketch Challenge

Now presenting OWH sketch 55 - and look at that, I kept to the prescribed layout two days in a row:

I'm so amazed I stayed with the sketch! But, then, I wasn't using all scraps like before. This allowed me to actually cut the sizes I wanted. When I think about it, the upper left piece is the only one that is not scraps so I guess I did pretty well. I cut that piece for the background because it was a companion to the flowers across the bottom edge of the center feature.

I chose to border the center element with yellow to pull that color from the background papers. By repeating that color on the stamped sentiment strip it brings the focus to the message.

The center panel is also popped up on foam tape to add interest.

On we go - to OWH sketch 54:

Oh my goodness! Look quick! I followed a sketch!

I knew I wanted to use the map image for the round element to make it resemble a globe. I chose very plain papers for the background in colors to represent sky, earth and ocean. The chevron paper represents nothing in particular but it jazzes up the piece and the color was good.

I used a round die to cut out the globe and to emboss the edges. Then I applied Distress ink to the edges to add some dimension.

Three cardstock work stickers add a touch of whimsy.

Here we go again - OWH sketch 53:

I promise I really did start with this sketch! When I got the two outer grey panels and the number panel between them I realized the graphic numbers were too bold and busy for what I had in mind. So I added the dotted grey strip to hide most of it.

I wanted to use a piece from the printed floral panel sheet and rounded the corners to soften it. It did not stand out from the background so I used Distress ink to darken the edges. I darkened the edges of the main card as well. My feature panel is printed directionally so I just rotated it on the card.

I went back to my new stock of Dazzles peel-off stickers and chose a silver sentiment with a flourish.

The pendulum swings both ways as you will see in todays use of OWH sketch 52:

The biggest problem with using scraps is that they are rarely the exact size you want them to be. So when I needed a wider strip of the floral I had to splice on a strip to the bottom. The flowers didn't match up and it was pretty obvious so I added a self-stick satin ribbon across the seam.

I recently purchased a mixed bag of Dazzles (peel-off) stickers and they included this awesome medallion. I cut a circle to match the background and applied the medallion over it. I added self-stick champagne rhinestones in two sizes to circle areas of the sticker.

Three additional dragonflies and a text sticker finish this off. Compared to yesterday's card this is definitely at the other end of the pendulum swing.

TIME for OWH sketch 51. Why TIME? You'll see...

This started out with a graph paper, the wavy band, a green rectangle, and the circle element punched out. Then I added the sentiment because of the clock in the circle and yawned. B-o-r-i-n-g!

I pulled out a stamp set with two clock images and applied them randomly and lightly over the background and the green rectangle. They stood out rather than blending in so I used Distress markers and an aquabrush to blend in color lightly over the clock faces.

I added a doodle line around the round piece and popped it up on foam tape to separate it from the background.

Another milestone as we reach OWH sketch 50!

Working with scraps again I came 'close' to the designated measurments on this card. In place of the foremost rectangle I applied a peel-off sticker birdhouse. I used Distress markers to color the open areas of the image to match the background elements as well as the flowers on the white piece.

I added a brown doodle line around the white piece for framing.

That was a very short break from sketches, right? Today we're back with OWH sketch 49.

I started with the floral panel which is a portion of a multi-image page. It is a bit smaller than the sketch and I also rounded the corners to soften it. The crossbar strip is from the scrap pile as it the houndstooth. However, the stripe is cut from a new page.

I used black doodle lines around one piece to tie in to the black of the stamped sentiment.

Verdigris Nails
Topic: Nail Art

Today's nail post is not so much nail 'art' but a note on color. Rarely do I ever use only one color on my nails. I prefer to combine colors to create patterns or overlay them to make new colors.

This time I put on two base coats of robin egg blue and overlaid this with two coats of golden glitter polish. Oh yes!

Viewing the blue through the filter of the gold magically creates a greenish hue reminiscent of weathered copper. This verdigris finish has a lot of depth to it and quite a bit of shine.

I always finish up with clear topcoat and a quickdry liquid that also conditions the cuticles.

Here is a closeup of the nails.

Yep, I think I'll write down the 'recipe' for these so I can do them again.
