Here we are at number 13 in our look at 20 cards from the same sketch:

I switched to a new sentiment for the feature and the first one I picked up to work with was stamped on yellow. I didn't want to get al matchy-matchy with the color so I chose a background with a more golden yellow rosebud print.

Greens were chosen for the flags and borders as this was also on the background.

Those greens are showing too far on the blue scale, though.

And, look, I found the round chipboard element that matches the paper!

I used a totally different technique on today's version of OWH sketch 258, shown here:

Well, it's not THAT special, but I hadn't up to now used any coloring on these cards. This white panel with a plain sentiment was just too plain so I colored in alternate letters with distress markers, to match the bordering and one of the flags.

I love the bordering that picks up the color of the dots in the background.

Neat how that round chipboard element has exactly the right colors.

We're now starting the second half of the cards made with OWH sketch 258 shown here:

If you think today's card looks familiar it's probably because it uses the same (orange) sentiment panel, the same flags and the same red heart chipboard sticker.

The bordering is changed from teal to a grayed green and, the biggest change, there are bold diagonal stripes rocking the background.

So much energy in this card!

Sometimes you just gotta wonder 'what was I thinking?' You'll see what I mean in this version of OWH sketch 258:

That questioning moment came when I found TWO sentiments stamped on bright orange. REALLY! That's hard to work with.

So I basically ignored the color of the sentiment and went with contrast - light teal, red and a dark yellow.

The only other touch of orange is in the foremost flag and it is a much lighter, softer tone.

Maybe it just speaks to the 'crazy' in the sentiment!

Working our way through the rainbow? That's what it felt like when I got to 'green' after pink, blue, yellow, etc. I don't do much green.

Here's the sketch again:

Al the sentiment was already stamped on green I really pulled out all the stops to keep this on that same track. The hardest part was getting greens that werent too yellow or too blue.

That gingham background is another thing I don't use too much. But on this, I think it looks good.

I used a very dark green for the bordering since all the other elements were so close in value.

Greens are not rendered very true by my camera as these all match much better than shown.

I'm a long way from done showing the multitude of cards I made from OWH sketch 258:

You'll notice - if you haven't already - that I dropped one layer out of the sketch on all of the cards, giving them a single border instead of a double one.

I decided to do one more with a vellum sentiment and backed this one with a printed pink paper.

I have several sheets of this bird printed cardstock but never found a good use for it up to now. The elements of this sketch cover enough of the birds that they cease to be identifiable as such. Then it becomes just a pink floral.

I liked that pink and used it in the flags and the bordering.

I selected red chipboard hearts for the embellishments that tie in with that one red dot on the front flag.

Here's another version of OWH sketch 258 - with many more yet to come. Reminder of the sketch:

I liked the look of the vellum used for yesterday's card so I sought out another sentiment printed on it. This one I backed with a printed teal paper.

The yellow flags I chose seemed rather random until I found a backing paper with dusky teal and yellow. SCORE!

The bordering color is a buttery yellow-gold, picked up from the flowers on the paper.

The teacup embellishment goes back to the more yellow color of the flag papers on the right side.

I had no idea when I sat down with this sketch that I would come away with 20 cards! Here's another look at OWH sketch 258:

The card today uses the same border color and the same embellishment and one of the same flag papers. So why does it look so different?

I started with a sentiment printed on vellum and backed it with a lace print paper. This immediately changed the feeling of the card. Add to this the use of flags with printed roses and a subtle script backing paper and you end up with a vintage look.

That embellishment color is not true in the photo as it is much closer to a true pink than shown.

When you find a sketch you like - keep going. Here's another OWH 258:

I keyed off the sentiment to choose papers for the flags, using hearts and 'love' text.

The raspberry bordering matches some of the hearts and focuses the attention on the kraft sentiment panel.

On with the marathon use of OWH sketch 258:

When I had a sentiment stamped on white cardstock it gave me a lot more flexibility in choosing papers to use in the design. I chose the flags first and then, instead of heading down the teal path as expected, I took that single red line on the striped flag and used it as the key to all the other elements.

I love the red dot paper which I matched in the bordering. The red also spoke to the selection of an embellishment.

Lest the sentiment look too plain, I added a red line border all around it.

Continuing on with the multiple uses of OWH sketch 258:

Today's version has a much cleaner look than yesterday's. This is predominantly due to the main background with its widely spaced large dots. I started out with a different pattern but when I turned the page over to apply the glue, this was the back of it. I liked it a lot better than the original choice.

The sentiment panel is very simple as well with that single word in script.

The three blue flags are dark, medium and light giving them good contrast and I used foam tape under the lower edge of the top one.

The chipboard embellishment used on this one is a blue teacup.

On we go with the mass production of cards using OWH sketch 258:

Although I started with a lavender sentiment panel the use of this color in the remaining elements is very subtle.

I went with a blue floral in a very busy print along with a pink teacup embellishment.

Teal bordering gives a bold look.

The bottom edge of the center flag is raised on foam tape to separate it from the other elements.

This is the next-to-last sketch being published by Operation Write Home The sketch actually came out on July 11 and I made TWENTY cards from it on that same day. Other postings needed to come first so these are just now up in the queue.

Here is OWH sketch 258:

I first went through my file of pre-stamped sentiments and selected twenty that were close to or larger than the specified main panel. Then I went through my scraps of strips of patterned paper and pulled lots of them. I sorted through them, selecting three to go with each sentiment panel. These were trimmed to 1 x 3 inches. Next was the selection of a background paper for each and, finally, a base card color that would also double as a border for the sentiment. The last step was to choose an embellishment (most of these were from a set of chipboard stickers).

All that was left was to, one by one, cut the pieces, trim the flags, and assemble the cards.

The first completed uses a yellow sentiment panel, shades of yellow printed flags, aqua borders and a yellow-gold embellishment.

Love that script background.

This spring when several of the squash plants did not sprout we lost track of which had been planted where and poked more seeds in the ground where (we thought) they were needed. So we ended up with THREE zucchini plants, one crook neck, one delicata but NO butternut and NO pattypan (scallop).

Well you know how zucchini can get away from you if you don't watch them like a hawk - and now we'ver got it TIMES THREE! Yikes!

I have made 9 mock apple pies (8 for the freezer), several pans of roasted summer squash for the freezer, two batches of zucchini pancakes (one for the freezer) and then when I went out today, BOOM! 4 more huge zucchini.

Well, I don't need any more pies so I think I'm gong to make a couple of mock apple crisp and use them at a barbeque later this month. There were also a few regular zucchini so maybe more pancakes are in order. That crookneck was great on the grill the other night so one of these will get that treatment and one will get sliced into rounds and crusted and froze to fry up later like fried green tomatoes. YUM!

I also picked some tomatoes for eating out of hand and for salads. There were more cherry tomatoes but I ate them while I was setting up this display.

Carrots and beets willl join some store-bought onions and sweet potato in a little roasted action. Hmmm, I may go back out and grab one of the green onions to add to that pan.

In other garden news: we got a few volunteer potatoes again this year that need dug. Didn't plant any corn at all. One cucumber left on the vine - not much action there, three small cukes and one gargantuan. No radishes planted. Banana peppers are going pretty good. Beans and peas are long gone, but were yummy.

Mom has been picking and eating from the plum tree and also picked and froze up about 6 gallons of blackberries.

We have a division of labor going on here. I weeded and planted, Mom weeds and waters, we all eat it up.

So good!

THE FINAL BONUS SKETCH!

After this there will only be the new regular sketches as ther are published every couple of weeks. And even those will soon be coming to an end as the last of the cards had to be in to OWH by August 1, 2015 so they could begin the process of winding down operations.

Here is the final bons sketch from OWH:

What a great opportunity to use up lots of the scraps of papers I have been using recently as king of a wrap-homage to this whole process.

I decided to go crazy with the dotted papers and popped the squares up on foam tape.

A glittery and a standard peel-off sticker sentiment were moved from the bottom of the card to the face of the squares for more impact.

The use of a quiet background allowed me to use a rub-on package at the bottom that features... dots! Way to bring it all together!

The white base card is allowed to peek out around the edges.

Love the sketch - if it's laying down! I decided to rotate this bonus sketch a quarter turn to the right.

I started with the vellum pansy group sticker and backed it with white.

I pulled bright yellow and purple solids from the flowers for the background and stripes.

I let the white base card show around the edges to echo the center block.

I added a sentiment with gold peel-off stickers.

Somebody in the bonus sketch world really got stuck on the square format. Here is the last of the NUMBERED bonus sketches - B32:

Sticker repeat!!!! Yep, I used another of the rose stickers - a single this time instead of the cluster.

I did mix it up with the accompanying papers though... a shimmery pink lace for the background a mottled rose for the horizontal strip and a leafy green for the center block.

I trimmed a pre-stamped sentiment to use and changed its location from the sketch.

I used a distress marker to color in the frame on the sentiment.

We haven't had a horizontal card for a while. Sketch-makers must have realized this and made provision for it in OWH bonus sketch B31:

I've been using the same sticker sets so much that the cards are starting to look familiar as soon as I start. I should go back and review by sticker set to see if I have become predictable in the selection of the same papers and embellishments to use with them!

Fortunately, the cards will all go to different people so nobody else will be comparing them side-by-side.

For this one, I used the vellum hydrangea stickers over a white block. The leaf color was pickked up perfectly in the X background.

I added a little interest by using a multi-colored stripe on the horizontal bar.

On the same vellu sticker sheet as the hydrangea was a twist of purple ribbon. I used that inside the stripes.

Another SQUARE? That's the plan for OWH bonus sketch B30:

I liked the bohemian paper I used yesterday so I cut a new piece for the sketch today.

A couple of berry stickers matched the background and provided a second color that I used for the center square block.

I also used this color formula to create the sentiment block along with its stickers.

For the sentiment I used some word stickers from a mixed sheet and make hearts with Distress Markers.

The sketch for OWH bonus B29 is wide open for interpretation. One had better have an interesting feature piece to pull off something like this:

The large clear sticker I chose to use was strong enough to stand up to a bold background so I pulled out one with a bohemian look.

The crosspiece was filled with a pre-stamped sentiment which I trimmed even with the illustration instead of running it out to the edges like the sketch showed.

No base card shows on this layout.
