I taught a tutorial on drawing cattails a couple of years back for a site that is now a subscription service. I had occasion, however, to use that lesson again for myself to draw the cattails alongside a river for this scripture in Amos.
The original lesson used them as a silhouette but I really like them more when they are colored.

We revisited a font called ROCK for this week's lettering in bible journaling. Our books of the week were Amos and Obadiah so this is the page I did.
It is difficult to use a big block of text with this style though.

The whole theme of this hymn is repentance and return. The bible story that came to mind for me was the Prodical Son.
I found this sketch my Leonardo DaVinci and did some editing in my Paint program to take the background to white and make the edges a vignette.
I edited a copy of the hymn to white out the center into roughly the same size and shape as the illustration.
Then I printed the music and ran the same paper back through to print the illustration over the top.
I used blended colored pencils on the illustration and added key phrases with brush pen.
The page was cut down and tipped in to the gutter of my hymnal.

I think this is the third time I have used dandelions in my bible art. In this case they represent the danger to the harvest.
I actually used the same lettering style as yesterday, too.

This is a lettering style that was introduced to our bible journaling group by Ann. I have not used it much since she taught it in 2018 but it is making a comeback for the book of Joel.
Since the name of the font and the scripture referenced have to do with generations I included a brief outline of an ancestral chart for illustration.
No names on the chart as it is not specific to any particular group or people.

This was an easy quilt to name. Pattern is a tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company called 'Turn Style'. Fabrics from my stash in red, white and blue. Fabric with historic American flags all over makes up the border and the cornerstones. Quilted with stars in bright yellow thread. It all came together as All-American Style.
The block pattern is a disappearing hourglass that starts with two ten inch squares - stitch, whack, stitch, repeat... Made in two color combinations and assembled by alternating the directions, separated by gold sashings.
Isn't that flag fabric neat? I wish I had bought much more of it when I was it originally. But I can't find it anymore.
I wanted the quilting to be noticable so I used bright yellow thread and stitched stars and swirls to stay with the patriotic theme.
The colors appear brighter than they actually are in this photo. I used the same blue for the binding.

Time for another decorated hymn posting. This one was accomplished by digital manipulation and here's what I did.
First, I downloaded a print of the one-page sheet music, brought it up in graphics program to whiten the background and sharpen the text. Then I inserted that as a picture in Word, adjusted it to be exactly the size as my physical hymnal pages which is 8.5 x 5.5 inches. This was set to be centered on the page.
Next, I found a graphic that I liked, downloaded it and brought it up in the graphics program to adjust color balance. I inserted this into the same Word document and adjusted the size to match the sheet music. This was also centered on the page. I applied a Word filter to the image (canvas) and saved the document.
Finally, I printed page one, reinserted the paper back into the printer and printed page two on top of it.
I used some a highlighter to reinforce the yellow glow, red-brown marker to fill in the cross, red marker for the wound. I used brown brush marker to write the lyrics top and bottom and outline the lamb.
I trimmed the image to match the size of my hymnal pages and glued this in. Then I added some printed border sticker pieces to the top and bottom (I wanted to cover the page number from the sheet music which was not the same as where I placed it in my hymnal.)
I am very pleased with the final result!

Next up in the book of Hosea was to use the drawing room lesson for the dove. I hadn't done this drawing for quite a while and never had I done it so large.
Although I did not add the scripture reference to this page it is Hosea 11:11.

Today's assignment was to use the font we call 'Path' in our bibles in the book of Hosea.
Yes, the word does appear a few times in that book but they are in a negative light and I try to keep my journaling focused on the positive as much as possible.
So I slanted the focus and use the font but substituted 'way' for 'path' and was happy with the verse I found to use.
I added an illustration for 'following the path/way' and used colored pencils on it.

Today I want to share the practice sheets for the lettering styles I reviewed this month and used in my bible for journaling.
You will have seen these on my pages that have been shared in the past few weeks.
I do my practice pages on dot grid paper in my Happy Planner.
And tomorrow we start June. Can't believe how fast this year is moving along. The days seem to drag but the months fly by. I'm not sure how that works!

Our assignment for a drawing to use in the book of Daniel was the Fox.
I did not find a scripture that had any relation to this so I chose one that simply refered to wild animals. I realize he doesn't look terribly wild but it fits the bill and causes one to stop and read the scripture.
This was a new tree structure for me as well.

The assigned lettering style to use in Daniel was to be 'power'. This style was actually a combination of two fonts, one that came only in uppercase and one that came only in lowercase. The uppercase letters look like they are constructed of overlapping boards while the lowercase letters look a bit like ribbon.
Many times I combine one of the drawing lessons with the assigned font but in this case they really had nothing in common so I split them into separate pages for treatment.

The assigned drawing to include in Ezekiel was the sheep. Waaaay back when I started making drawing tutorials, a page with six sheep was one of the earliest lessons.
Personally I had never included this version in my Bible so this seemed like a good time to do so.
The original he was modeled from was found on Pinterest a few years back. I don't know the original source.
This fella used simple colored pencil work which was then blended with odorless mineral spirits.

For today's hymnal art I used 'Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty'. In my hymnal, this song only spanned a portion of the page allowing for a smaller treatment than most.
I keyed off the phrase 'God in three persons, blessed Trinity' and found an old woodcut image to use as inspiration for my drawing.
It took some study to figure out how to precisely place the shapes so they would interlock and meet perfectly. Each section was filled with the written name of the person of the trinity while the center shows their combination as the Godhead.
I used a combination of colored pencils and gel pens in the colors of royalty (blue, purple and gold) for the coloring.
That view shows the shine of the gold glitter gel pen.

On Facebook I got notification through one of the quilting groups I am on that a lady was sponsoring a 'quarantine quilt-along'. She would provide the pattern and do periodic instructions throughout the day. We would follow the directions and do our piecing between her live broadcasts.
I chose to pull black-and-white fabrics from my stash along with a fabrics I have disliked since the moment it came to me (from a grab-bag my sister-in-law got at an auction). Very strange piece.
My quilt ended up at 49 x 65.
Over 6000 people world-wide participated in the quilt-along.
So I finished this up today on the longarm machine. I used a pantograph of large flowers with cream thread. It doesn't put up too much contrast on the darker fabrics.
I chose a black on white dot for the binding.
Not my usual style at all. But there was no telling what the result was going to be before we started.
Because it was a quarantine quilt I named it Ninty Eight Point Six.

In the revisiting of lettering styles from 2018 this is the page that features the "follow' font in the book of Ezekiel.
I like this font best when it is combined with something else that is simpler.
It sort of has the look of a font that might have been used on a sign in the 1950s.

A few years back our group was given a whole lot of fabric by the family of a lady who had passed away. Her name was Betty. We've all been using it and we refer to the results as 'Betty Quilts'.
One of the fabrics I took was printed with blocks of faux applique. I used some in a quilt before but I had 13 of the applique prints left. I cut them down to use as centers in 12" blocks created by adding three rounds of scrappy log cabin strips (cut using a friend's die cutter).
Twelve of the resulting blocks were sashed together with a dotted fabric and then I used more Betty fabric for the outer borders.
The over-arching theme of these fabrics is 'hearts'. So after I had quilted around the motif in the applique blocks, the applique blocks themselves and the sashings, I quilted free-hand hearts in all the outer borders.
Then I found the perfect fabric for the binding in my sister's stash - the perfect blue with little irregular hearts.
This will go to the hospital for their Passages program.

For the drawing page in Lamentations I used the chain. Although chains are mentioned in this book it was not in a context that I wanted to journal around. So I simply used a thought to go with the drawing.

I had such fun constructing this page in my hymnal.
The boots I sketched with inspiration from clipart. The quote is from a 'church sign' we passed on our way to town.
Altogether, I think it makes a cute page.

Look to the title for the quilt name!
This quilt uses the other half of the blocks from the class I took at the Sew Expo (Constellation, posted on May 17).
Whereas that quilt mixed thm with big red blocks, this time I combined them with white blocks. When I split up the blocks for the two quilts I saved most of the bright prints for this one and those with softer colors on the other where they would not compete with the big reds.
How much that changes the look!
The white fabric blocks have awesome line art scattered squares that inspired the quilting. I got a pantograph with crazy angles and used it with white thread. This lets it blend in on the face of the quilt and only stand out on the red border. That border is the same fabric as the red blocks on the other quilt.
I finished this off with even more lines by adding a pinstriped binding.
