Reading Recommendation
Now Playing: rubber stamping resource for cards
Topic: Books

Today I would like to review for you a book on making rubber stamped cards. This 2006 publication by North Light Books uses 52 different stamps - all of which could be easily substituted by those in your own collection. The stamp styles are generally line drawings by Hero Arts stamp company.

Simply Cards by Sally Traidman (ISBN 1581806744) presents two projects for each of the stamps, each resulting in completely different styled cards. I found not a single bad idea in this 128 page volume.

Highly Recommended!

Paper Draper
Now Playing: unexpected background
Topic: New Work

For this card I first started with making the 3D element of the pillows and jar of buttons. But however I tried to mount it on a card looked boring or contrived. I had a print of a quilt from a catalog ad but it was printed as a full, flatt, spread out quilt.

After trimming to the edges of the quilt I applied dry-line runner along all the edges and 'gathered' here and there to make it look like it was draped over the top edge of the card. By smoothing out the folds and attaching them as needed to make it lie down, I thing I succeeded in turning it into a more realistic background.

Then I set the 3D illustration at the bottom.

Two Little Buddies
Now Playing: more along the same thread
Topic: New Work

From our friends at Form-a-Lines come these adorable field mice. They are supposed to be on a stalk of wheat but I had already pricked them out on yellow so chose to give them a pink wildflower to perch on.

Background papers were selected to enchance the pink of the wildflower and both little guys have a black bead as an eye.

LOVE these, and they work up very quickly.

A True Original
Now Playing: my 3D sheet in use
Topic: New Work

I found a beautiful image of a hydrangea on the internet and made my own 3D cutting sheet using PhotoPaint. I worked it up and mounted it up on a beautiful deep pink and that over blue to complement the colors in the flower.

I finished it off with gold peel-off corners and a greeting.

MONEY, Money, money
Now Playing: spend a little less, get a little more
Topic: Web resources

If you are shopping for paper crafting and scrapbook supplies (and who isn't?) you will ALWAYS get a good deal at www.frugalities.com

Every day, when you open their page, you get a notice of the discount of the day. Everything on their website is discounted by that percentage for the whole day. Next day - different discount! On the day I am posting this their discount is 49%.

Once you get into the store you can shop by brand, by manufacturer, or by type of product.

Some Fun!

And Nary a Cross Word
Now Playing: "across" words, yes! But not "cross words"
Topic: Web resources

By those topic headings you must think I'm feeling a little wacky today! But it does make sense when I disclose the featured website of the day.

If you go to http://www.millstone.com/pages/crossword/crd_home.jsp you will find that you can input your own words and list of clues and have a custom crossword automatically generated for you.

Now, what possible use could that be? Well, think of the fun your friends and family will have when you drop in such a puzzle with a birthday card - custom made with their hobbies, interests, inside jokes and the like. What about making up a little puzzle to go in Halloween treat bags, Christmas stockings, gift cards... Make one with names of party goers where the clues are things others have to find out about them (Q. Who has been skydiving? A. Debbie). Make a special puzzle as a subject test for your homeschool kids or a Bible quiz for your Sunday School class.

Breaking the Rules
Now Playing: sometimes you just have to make it up as you go
Topic: New Work

This card is made with the pattern recently posted free on form-a-lines. I really like the wreath itself but when I began stitching according to the directions It just looked too 'spiky' for my taste.

So I changed the stitching sequence to give them a little twist. After making the center cross I used each corner to stitch in a shell pattern using all the holes in the accompanying petals.

A Slice of Pie
Now Playing: a delicious new 3D
Topic: New Work

I printed this 3D from one of my favorite sites for free 3Ds. I had some scrapbook paper with old recipes printed on it which seemed to fit. the two borders are also scrapbook paper. The Home illustration is a sticker from a sheet of nostalgics.

I used a grey marker to create a shadow around the illustration to create a little more depth.

She's Such an Angel
Now Playing: stamped image enhanced with color
Topic: New Work

Some time back I entered a swap of stamped images. I am just now getting around to using them. This angel is colored with watercolor pencils and lightly wet using a watercolor brush.

I used some ribbons I had on hand to create a frame for her.

Creatin' My Own 3D
Now Playing: card for a friend
Topic: New Work

I made this card by using two identical pieces from a collage sheet. They had photoedited the original to appear three dimensional anyway, so I cut aroung the elements on the second copy and mounted them with silicone glue.

It is mounted on vellum with gold dragonflies printed on it, over printed scrapbook paper. The eyes on some of the dragonflies are little gold peel-off dots, the corners and the "congratulation" are also gold peel-offs.

I added the purple script as a vellum sticker.

Fall Paper Wreath
Now Playing: folding your way into fall
Topic: Some Backlog

Last fall... hmmm, maybe it was the year before last... I made this paper wreath as a demo for an online group. It is from the instructions on a Carol Duvall show (Episode CDS-1561)

I used four sheets of scrapbook paper with an over-all leaf pattern in muted tones (each is cut into 4 squares for the project). I added a bow of wire-edge ribbon that I had on hand.

Holidays Are All Sewed Up
Now Playing: ...I wish
Topic: New Work

OK my holidays are NOT all sewed up, but I am making progress.

This pattern is from a demo website and is offered free. I used metallic gold thread on forrest green mulberry paper. Then I tore the edges against my deckle-edge ruler and mounted to gold card and then to burgundy to finish out the trio of Christmas colors.

Handmade Cards For My Birthday
Now Playing: ...each one a gift in itself
Topic: Work By My Friends

I belong to several online groups and many friends from those groups sent lovely cards for my birthday. Some are on more than one list with me and many friends not on any of my lists. So I thought I'd show them all here in one place.

Cozy Card
Now Playing: with scraps again
Topic: New Work

I get a catalog of quilt kits on a regular basis. I don't 'do' quilting but I sure love to cut up the catalog for the nice pictures! This is a section of the center of one such catalog illustration. I mounted it on scrapbook paper that looks like a checked flannel fabric.

The text label is vellum which does not show well in the photo, but looks great in person. It is a Psalm "The stars are telling the glory of God and the firmament is reflecting his handiwork." It seemed to fit with not only the blue of the quilt but with the star pattern of it.

Put on Your 3D Glasses
Topic: New Work

I printed up a LOT od 3D sheets from my two favorite sites and spent an evening cutting out parts for 10 of them. These are the first I have done using the silicone glue to separate the layers. I can't imagine going back to the foam tape or any other method of mounting.

This lady in pink is my favoriet and I even gave her a rhinestone where the picture had a ring.

Baby card
Now Playing: from bits and pieces
Topic: New Work

This baby card began life as a much larger quilt in a catalog. I trimmed it down to 'baby size' and mounted on handmade paper. I tore the paper along a ruler, mitred the corners and folded all 4 edges in to make a 'binding' for the quilt and it even feels kinda like flannel! Then I used grosgrain ribbon to frame all 4 sides, again with mitred corners.

The whole quilt is glued onto a card covered with leftover scrapbook paper and, finally, a sticker of baby shoes was placed in the corner.

Stamp Out Art
Now Playing: using artistamps on cards.
Topic: Some Backlog

For a swap a few years ago I made some faux postage using some of my own paintings. I had sheets left over so recently used blocks of them to make cards. I just combined papers and illustrations that complemented the colors and theme of the artistamps.

Here are two of the cards I made:

Stitchin' Again
Now Playing: Christmas trees
Topic: New Work

The website for Form-a-Lines recently shared three new free patterns. I make up their new Christmas Tree twice.

Both of them are done on metallic black paper. First I used a verigated metallic thread in purple and green. I mounted it on... you guessed it: metallic purple and green.

True, it does not show up too well on a photo, but in person it looks good.

Then next one I used a two-toned green for the tree, metallic gold for the ornaments down the left side, metallic copper for those on the right, and a metallic silver for the star. The mounting used a layer of gold and ov copper over green cardstock.

When I add a 'Merry Christmas' caption to these they will be ready to go.

A Recipe to Share
Now Playing: Green Tomato Bread
Topic: cookbook

For those who are fans of nut breads and find themselves, at this time of year, deluged by tomatoes in the garden, I'll share the recipe I have for Green Tomato Bread. If you've had Zucchini Bread you'll find it similar but I actually like it better:

GREEN TOMATO BREAD

1 ½ cups ground green tomatoes

½ cup grated tart apple

2 cups sugar

1 cup vegetable oil

3 beaten eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg

¾ cup chopped nuts

½ cup raisins (optional)

In a large bowl, combine green tomatoes, apple, sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla. Into separate bowl, sift dry ingredients. Stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients.

Add nuts and raisins (if using) and stir to combine. Divide mixture between two greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour, or until a tester comes out dry.

NOTE: The green tomatoes can be ground and measured out for freezer storage until you are ready to make bread, if you wish.
