O Holy Night

In the hymnal I was using this song covered two facing pages - completely. So I took this opportunity to make a double spread illustration of the shepherds in the field with the angels making their announcement.

I used a fine-line marker to draw the illustration and then used Prismacolor pencils to color it. The pencils were blended with Gamsol to get a fairly smooth overage.


I'm not sure why I ended up with three of everything - three angels, three sheep, three shepherds and three hills. Strange, but it works!

The white lettering and stars are made with POSCA paint pen.

Away In A Manger

Still working in my hymnal with art. This week the assignment was Away In A Manger.

In my book, the song only takes up 3/4 of the page so that is all I decorated. I sketched in fine-line marker, colored with bright markers, blacked out the background with Marks-a-Lot chisel marker and added the title back in with white POSCA pen.


You can just barely see the music through the background.

Because this bled through the paper in a BIG way, it will make a great place to glue in a song on the back that is not in this hymnal.

Hymnal Art - We Gather Together

In coming up to Thanksgiving I recall how this hymn was sung as a blessing at a meal in some church gatherings.

To focus in on that, I drew a fall wreath with leaves and then 'set the table' in the center of it.


Fineline marker and colored pencils (metallic silver for the flatware) were used for the elements.

I didn't realize how opsided the wreath was until I came back to this page later.

Come Thou Fount - Hymnal Art

This hymnal page is quite different than most going before it. I actually covered a lot of the page with black marker to define the edge of the guitar.

The drawing is with fineline marker and I used colored pencils for the blending of color over the surface of the instrument.


I focused in on one short phrase in the lyrics to really focus the hymn to the basic elemental idea.

Art In My Hymnal - Count Your Blessings

The decoration for this page is interlocking block lettering of a scripture done with markers plus script stickers to list my blessings.


The bushel basket is also done in markers as is the heart.

Hymnal Art - Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus

I really used a LOT of stickers on this page.

The headline, the ornaments and the lollypops are all stickers as is the colored band that separates this song from the previous one on the page.

I completed the other text with fineline and brush markers. These got a wash of color from markers.

I used fineline markers to turn letter circles into the celophane on the lollypops and added white pen to create some highlights throughout.

Hymnal Art - Jesus Paid It All

Here is another hymn I decorated in my hymnal. I love doing these artistic representations of the old hymns I grew up with.


In this case I used a red brush pen and bounce lettering to write a quote that fit the theme. A black brush pen was used for the cross.

Crown Him

Another page done in my hymnal. This one is Crown Him With Many Crowns.

For my artwork I drew a stack of different kinds of crowns using Prismacolor fine marker and colored with markers.

The colors are not as bright here as I adjusted to make the dingy brownish-yellow out of the page background.

I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say

Another hymn was chosen for art that was indeed in my book but that I had never heard. We obviously grew up with a limited repertoire and a different one than some others. I wonder if the distinction is regional. It isn't denominational as the book I am using is the hymnal from the denominationn in which I grew up.

In any case, I focused on the aspect of prayer and chose a scripture to reinforce this. 

I lettered over the musical staffs and then added several stickers to fit the theme.

God Will Take Care Of You

My hymnal is really looking good as I add more artwork to it. This week the assigned hymn was 'God Will Take Care Of You'.

I pulled out my envelope of stickers and created a sticker collage on this page. Instead of using the song lyrics I chose a scripture with the same theme. The letter dots are stickers, outlined in ink. Then I lettered the rest of the verse over the sticker bookmark using Prismacolor marker.

More stickers for borders and a gold sticker for the open bible.

 


Doesn't Isaiah 41:10 fit this hymn perfectly?

Does Jesus Care

The assigned hymn to work on this week was 'Does Jesus Care'. Of coourse we KNOW he does and this song confirms it.

I didn't want to have to do a truly photographic version of a face so I found a photo of a sculpture which automatically gave me a gray-scale image. I drew the defined lines with Prismacolor marker and did all the shading with regular graphite pencil.


I may need to spray this with a fixative to keep it from smearing.

Abide With Me
Topic: Hymnal Art

There is such satisfaction in doing artwork in my hymnal. I decided to use some fancy lettering for this hymn and liked it so much that I am going to create a lesson to teach this lettering style.


The black lines are Prismacolor marker and I did the letter fills with gold glittery gel pen (Signo brand).

He Hideth My Soul

Another assigned hymn to illustrate.

I had in my mind exactly what I wanted and had to search for just the right elements for reference material. I needed a hand (I used a photo of my own), a split rock (found photo on Pinterest) and a flower (which I edited so it looks nothing like the reference photo).

Faith Of Our Fathers

For this hymn I borrowed from one of the Drawing 101 lessons I took a while back. One of the photos we were given to work from was called Dorothy Church and we drew it in pencil - learning aout multi-point perspective.

I used the same building - drawing from my own original drawing, but this time in ink.


Markers were used for the coloring.

Jesus Loves Me This I Know

With a hymn so familiar to all I wanted an illustration that had a lot of symbolism. I went with the hands of Jesus holding the earth and then turned the earth into a heart.

I references John 3:16 to tie it all together.

I used markers for the coloring.

A Sure Foundation

This is another hymn assignment that immediately brought an image to mind. I used a similar illustration in my bible quite some time ago with a scripture that refers to the cornerstone.


The original idea for the cross built into the corner was one I saw on Pinterest - I think it was for a conference advertisement but I am no longer sure about that.

This page is colored with markers.

Everybody Sing!

I took most of July off from this activity as I did not want to do 4 weeks of patriotic hymns. One was plenty.

When I saw the name of this hymn I immediately thought of the stacked up animals in the children's book: The Bremen Town Musicians. I don't remember what the book was about so no idea how well it fits, but I just wanted that illustration.


I colored using markers.

Hymnal Art - Great Is Thy Faithfulness

I didn't realize how closely the lyrics of the chorus of this hymn reflect the verses in Lamentations3:22-23. 

I didn't have any inspiration for illustrating the lyrics so I filled with hand-drawn flowers which I colored with markers.

I love finding little cross-references like this!

Hymnal Art - America the Beautiful

Our leader in the group of hymnal artists assigned a whole month of patriotic songs for this week and through the month of July. I want my hymnal to reflect worship more than nationalism so I completed just this one patriotic song.


I created the words with a sticker set. The color bands represent the lyrics (not in order) as 'spacious skies', 'purple mountains majesty', 'amber waves of grain' and ' the fruited plain'.

Hymnal Art - Go Tell It On the Mountain

This hymn is often sung at Christmas - so much that we think of it as a Christmas song. But the lyrics go way beyond that.

this was not included in my hymnal so I decorated a page printed from online. I used markers for the color, brush pen for the blak lettering and white paint pen for the letter outlines and snowcaps.

The completed page was trimmed to size and tipped into the gutter of the song book.
