I have always loved this hymn but I must admit - since it was played at my sister's funeral I can't get through it without tears.

The bible book this was paired with in the group I journal with was Old Testament. But while I was contemplating the lyrics, it spoke to me that the Apostle Paul had a great take on it, as well.

I used a brush pen to write the text of his verse in Philippians over the waterfall from an old drawing lesson I taught.

Yes, It is well with my soul.

 I started this page in the sketchbook with a quilting motif, called a feather. Then I just started adding doodly details, one at a time.

I really like the result and the graphic feel of the black and white. (The drawing book really does have a slight gray cast to it, though)

I might try copying this and making the paper appear more white. Then, adding colors found in peacock feathers would really bring it to life.

 In my vacation sketchbook I used a compass to draw overlapping circles of various sized and inked them. Then I started filling them with a variety of doodles, working in pen.

I hid a few odd things in there: a few buttons, a balloon, a face.

When I was done I reinforced the outlines of the circles with a second line for more definition.

This was a lot of fun and an easy project to pick up and set aside to fit into a schedule of other activities.

When I taught the stone path before it went up the side of the page as though you were walking into the picture.

The page I wanted to put the path on this time already had text in that space so I made the path across the bottom margin so you can walk left to right (or vise versa).

I did the coloring with colored pencils which were then blended with Gamsol.

The same verse is referenced in the text column and the stone path drawing.

I created this page in my hymnal in the same way I did the page for Take Time To Be Holy, not too long ago.

That is: I made a copy of the page in the hymnal then opened a Word document and called up one of my own photos. I sized it to be exactly the same as the copied hymn - both in size and in placement on the page. Then I put the page with the hymn back in the printer and printed the photo over the song.

This was then trimmed to size and glued into the hymnal over the original page.

The photo was taken from our back deck with a view across the valley. Love the double rainbow.

I like that the rainbow is God's assurance of a promise, so that is why I selected it for this hymn.

Today we have a page of bible journaling in Deuteronomy.

I got these mountains from an old drawing lesson I taught a couple of years ago and paired them with a lettering lesson from the same year.

I like both just as much as I did back then, even though they are in a totally different context.

I have always tried to provide drawing lessons that can be used for a variety of verses.

 On my recent vacation I took along a new sketchbook (with dot grid pages) along with pencil, drawing pens and a set of colored pencils. Although I also took along other art supplies, the drawing and coloring ones were what I used throughout the trip.

The first one I did was some random doodling, in pen, around a scripture done in brush pen. I just letting the sketch grow without a plan and then used colored pencils on it.

I am trying to decide how to carry this into my Bible without redrawing the whole thing. I think it will have to go in the interleaved Bible so text is not obliterated.

We'll see. I don't want to tear it out of the sketchbook, though.

With the new year I started a new round of revisiting old lettering lessons. I also started working with a Happy Planner for my bible journaling and decided to re-letter new sample sheets of all the alphabets in that format before using them in my bible.

Then I decided I would just lump all of the month's pages in one post at the end of each month.

I've come to one of those old typography samples that fits into the week's assigned bible book. I actually combined two styles in this piece, one a really funky doodle style followed by a very simple serif font with unusual coloring to set it off.

Deuteronomy 2:7 gets the honors on today's page.

Well, personally I will NOT be doing any gardening, but I did draw some flowers in my bible.

I created these flowers quite some time ago. I think they look so fresh and clean that I like using them over and over.

This time they ended up in Numbers 24:5-6 (excerpts).

I drew them using very fine double wavy lines and colored with three yellow tones of colored pencil and two greens. Colors were blended using Gamsol on paper stump (my new favorite technique).

I wrote script in black and then orange gel pen to tie it back to the flowers.

I had another 2018 font I wanted to reuse. This was one called 'protect' that is an original I created.

The landing place for this was Numbers 14:9 where the Israelites were spying out the land God was going to give them. They were promised protection from the people who lived there.

This section of scripture also describes the huge bunch of grapes they brought back that men had to carry on a pole over their shoulders, so I drew grapes colored with gel pens.

The letters are filled in with some of that lovely glitter gold gel pen that freaks out the focus on the camera.

I still like this pen and just ordered three more because one ran out of ink and we CANNOT have that!

I really noodled on how I could get photos into my hymnal and finally came up with this concept:

1. take photo
2. make a photocopy of the hymnal page
3. download photo and size to the same as the hymn with the same placement on the page
4. load the print of the hymn in the printer
   
5. print the photo

I managed to squeeze out a little time for quilting in the midst of all this bible journaling! I actually cut out all the parts for this in September when I had a friend's AccuQuilt machine and dies on loan for a few weeks.

Actually, I cut a TON of fabric scraps and made kits for dozens of quilts which allows me to just pick up a bag of parts and go straight to sewing.

I had found the pattern for something along these same conceptual lines. They used strip sets of 6 2" strips and I used 5 of 2.5" strips. This made the measurements they had for the blocks totally wrong for me so I just followed the process while inserting my own data.

The finished quilt in the magazine was for a square baby quilt using only 4 of the big blocks. I added 2 of my bigger blocks (for a total of 6) and added wider borders to make a lap quilt.

All from scraps!

I quilted on the longarm machine with a pantograph called "Bountiful Feathers" - my favorite!

First quilt on Squatch with not a single thread break, too.

This art by another artist came in both a line art drawing and a lightly colored version. I liked the concept but it was not bright enough for me so I brought it into 'Paint' and used the spraycan feature with multiple colors in many layers to get what I wanted. I also added the drop-shadow to the lettering on the right side.

I did the lettering down the left side with brush marker and yellow highlighter.

This was trimmed to the size that would fit in my interleaved bible with a border all around. I glued it in.

I have used illuminated lettering before in my bible (in Matthew, for the Lord's Prayer). This time it is used in Levitius to list the prescribed Offerings and Observances that were to be adhered to by the Israelites.

By putting these on two facing pages it is nicely balanced. I changed the color scheme from the NT use of these letters to distinguish them.

A lot og gold glitter gel pen decorates these letters which makes it hard for my camera to get good focus.

When I am going to draw the same thing in my bible that I've already used elsewhere, I try to do it such a way that it is not obvious that it is the same item. That is what I did with these palm fronds that I had previously used in the New Testament with the Palm Sunday text.

I did not realize that the people were told in Leviticus to cut palm branches and wave them in praise to the Lord.

So this time I drew the branches much larger, limited them to just two and used fine pen to draw everything with double wavy lines.

Each branch was colored with a combination of two greens and the colors were blended with Gamsol using a paper stump.

One of our group artists drew her interpretation of the lampstand made for the Tabernacle as described in Exodus.

I took her line art and printed it out then used metallic markers to color it all, leaving little bits of white paper as reflections.

I whited out the stem of the stand so my lettering would 'read' over the top of it.

Exodus 25:31 was selected by the artist.

I cut my page to fit my bible page and glued it in only at the spine.

I once drew a tutorial on how to draw a waterfall. It was simplistic (to aid in the teaching to non-drawers). When this verse popped up talking about twelve springs I decided to break the waterfall into multiple stages and embellish them a little. I added in some palms to reflect the rest of the verse (Exodus 15:27).

I started at the top and drew a very short fall of water. Then that level of rocks were added. Next came the pool of water followed by the next layer of short falls and rocks. I continued until I got to the bottom and then went back to add the elements above the falls.

After I had inked everything, erased the pencil and colored with colored pencils I blended with Gamsol on a paper stump. More color was added to the water followed by sparkles in the water done with POSCA white paint pen.

I lettered the verse at the top and bottom and colored in the lettering.

The next old font I used from 2018 was one called 'still'. I combined it with Exodus 14:14 and rally let that word 'FIGHT' burst right off the page.

I looked up some illustrations and photos of boxing gloves and drew these directly into my bible (no test sketches on paper). These were then colored with Prismacolor brush marker (which does not bleed through bible paper),

I colored in the letters of the big word to match the gloves and pulled back to yellow for the other words.

I quite like this - bold and intriguing.

The bible journal page I did today was to feature a font that was taught back in 2018. Since, in Genesis, everything is 'new' that is the name of the font!

The font features wedge letters with a tripple dot embellishment. I changed my dots to diamonds and only used them on the upper-case letters.

Genesis 15:6 was my featured verse.

I liked the lettering well enough to let it stand on its own instead of making it compete with an illustration.
