O God Our Help In Ages Past

I'm sure I wouldn't do nearly the number of hymn journaling pages if I didn't have specific assignments. But, I'm glad I do because I quite love it.

It is sometimes a challenge to come up with something that goes with the theme of the hymns or even the specific lyrics, though.

The art for this one is something I drew in my sketchbook while on vacation, even coloring it. Since it was too complicated to trace into my hymnal I decided to do an overprint.

I copied the hymn first then sent that page back through the printer to add the artwork over the top. I did have to reinforce some of the smaller lettering in the connecting words of the phrases as they became a bit obscured by where they fell in the music and text of the song.

 


Because of the printing process the page does not have as vibrant of color as the original sketchbook version.

Beauty in Isaiah
Topic: Bible Journaling

In Isaiah we were assigned to use a font introduced in 2018 as 'beauty'. This was a font I designed about 15-20 years ago, and this was its first introduction to the world.

I pulled in coneflowers from an old drawing lesson to illustrate this page.


The art uses colored pencils blended with odorless mineral spirits.

Typography in Isaiah

I traced it onto the appropriate page in my Journal the Word bible and used colored pencils on it.

Converging Daydreams
Topic: Quilting

You may remember the 'convergence' quilts I made a while back. I was having so much fun with that pattern that I cut our PILES of parts to make more. I did make a couple of tops and set them aside when making masks so they haven't been quilted yet.

However, I had enough fabrics to cut TWO of a fabric I loved with multicolored lilacs on it. Well, I got to daydreaming about how I could combine those fabrics to make one larger quilt with the same feel to it.

I found, first of all, that trying to draw this idea on paper was worthless as every time something wasn't working out I had to erase the phole thing and start over. GAAAAAHH!

So I started working by the seat of my pants. 'What if..." and then cutting and interleaving and sewing back together. "Now if I do this..." and trying that out.

When I was all done I had a beautiful, if smallish, lap quilt. I was so excited by it that it went right to the head of the line of projects to go on the longarm machine.


I used a pantograph called 'paisley' to quilt this.

Today I again combined an old lettering lesson (Gladness) with an old drawing lesson (Butterfly). This was to journal in the book of Ecclesiastes.

Log Cabins Under the Needle

Well, I haven't given up on quilting even though none have made an appearance for quite some time. Actually, I have been making lots of quilt tops and setting them aside to quilt later.

In addition to that I made 137 face masks for distribution. We kept a few for ourselves and gave out some to friends and neighbors. I still had 108 to donate to the local hospital for staff to wear when not at work. they were delighted to get them.

When that was done I pulled out the last of the projects I was asked to do the quilting on from my late sister's materials. She had pieced a simple wall hanging, a top for a throw pillow and a large bed topper - all of them 100% flannel.

She had left behind a rough sketch of ideas on quilting the pillow and bed topper which I incorporated into the free-motion work I did on the longarm machine.

I didn't get any photos of the wall hanging as it was simple half-square triangles from the leftovers of the quilt.

Here is the bed topper:


The bottom is the closest to true colors. Here is one of the cabins close up:

Cornerstones each for an oak leaf:

The doors all have woodgrain:

 
Windows have a frame and sashing:
 


Each chimney has scrolled smoke coming out:


Vertical sashing features vines and leaves:


And every cabin sits on a stone foundation:


The throw pillow is a single cabin with the same red sashing (quilted the same way) all around. The pillow measured 22 inches, so you can see the scale of this bed topper.

The flannel was not as linty as I expected so I had few challenges in quilting these pieces.

Gems of Proverbs

Another old drawing lesson yeilded up these gemstones. I like geing able to change the gem from one type to another with the use of color.

Rescued
Topic: Bible Journaling

To use a fish hook image in bible journaling I went to an oversized drawing.

I enjoyed interlocking the words with the image.


You can see a bit of shadowing from the other side of the page but it is not this noticable in real life.

Bible Journaling in Psalms

The assignment for the book of Psalms was to incorporate the word 'delight' with the font of the same name.

This is one of my favorite casual fonts to work with.

Quiver in Psalms

A bible journaling site I participate on provided a sketch for the quiver I used to decorate my page. I blended the colored pencils with odorless mineral spirits.

I inscribed the scripture on the side of the quiver.

Words for Psalms Times Three
Topic: Bible Journaling

The three bible pages today may look familiar. I participated in two 30-day challenges last year on using typography for bible verses. As I go through the bible journaling this year I am transfering some of these to my Journal the Word bible.

I'm not doing all of them as some results did not impress me all that much when I went back later in review.

I chose three for Psalms and traced them in. I kept the same colors and scale. All were sized for margin art but, where I had extra space, I scooched the block over for more visual balance.

Though some were not included because I had already used the appropriate page in my bible, many others were skipped because I didn't like the design sketch. I may, at some point, do new sketches for these that I can include in my bible.

Journaling in the Book of Job

Once again I combined a lettering style from 2018 and a drawing lesson of the same year.


The font is called 'life' and the drawing is 'spiral rose'. Colored pencil was blended with odorless mineral spirits.

Lily Of the Valley
Topic: Hymnal Art

Last year I made a drawing tutorial for a plant called 'lily of the valley'. I know it would be perfect to illustrate this hymn of the same name.


I used Prismacolor colored pencils and blended with odorless mineral spirits and a paper blending stump. This makes the colors so vibrant.

Bible Journaling in Esther
Topic: Bible Journaling

It seems that most bible journaling in Esther will touch on the scripture 'perhaps you came to your position for such a time as this'. I guess it is the one part of the story that all of us can relate to.

But I had already drawn on that page and till wanted to use the theme of 'time' so I found an alternate scripture to focus upon.

For this page I combined a font I called Time when I taught it in 2018 and a drawing lesson of an hourglass.


Focus is a time of celebration and remembrance for God's answer to prayer.

Take My Life and Let It Be

 Lots of littleclear stickers made their way onto this page to enhance the brush lettering. Focusing on a key phrase in the lyrics is my favorite way to decorate hymns.

Ezra Duo
Topic: Bible Journaling

I used a combination of an old font (Worship) and an old drawing lesson (open book) to create a page for Ezra.

This is lettered with Prismacolor Premier pens and colored with Prismacolor Premier colored pencils.


I find this to be an easy script to write with as the letters seem to come naturally.

Typography In Use
Topic: Bible Journaling

Twice last year I joined in month-long challenges to do assigned bible verses in decorative typography. This year I am trying to use them in my bible as I come to the book in my year-long journaling through the bible plan.

It was time to pull out this design from 1 Chronicles.

All of these typography designs were planned to be margin art.


I used the original colors but the flag is an add-on. This Christian Flag made be think back to reciting the pledge when we were in Sunday School and Bible School in my youth.
