Dragonfly in Malachi
Topic: Bible Journaling

Today's page is actually a combination of three assignments: 1) the 'walk' font 2) drawing a dragonfly and 3) journaling in the book of Malachi. I often will split assignments into two but these all combined well.

The dragonfly actually has nothing to do with the verse or the font but fills the spae and gives a focus on the page.

I used a handful of pastel colors of colored pencils on the wings which make them look glassine and quite lovely.


This is a nicely shaped italic print font that features graceful curves in the upper-case letters.

Sweet Osmanthus in Zechariah

I first learned to draw this flower from a book of daily doodles. It is so simple to do and has such a great effect. Some day I want to try the same concept to draw hydrangea blossoms since they have the same basic construction (just different flower shapes).

For this page I combined the art with a scripture in Zechariah written in a simple script.


The Sweet Osmanthus comes in different colors - most common are orange, white and yellow. I like the orange best and it combines well with the bright lime green even though the real leaves would be darker - artistic license, ya know.

Here's a Branch of Zechariah
Topic: Bible Journaling

Just revisiting a font from a couple of years ago that is designed to mimic branches. I combined it with a scripture referencing the word 'branch'.

In our Cover 2 Cover bible journaling plan we've reached the book of Zechariah. That means we are almost up to starting the New Testament!

 


On this font there is the option of leaving the letters open, filling with color or filling with solid black.

This font does not have a lower case.

Who Said It First?
Topic: Bible Journaling

OK, the assignment was to use the 'deer' drawing in the book of Habakkuk. And there is a wonderful scripture at the end that is the perfect place for this.

However, I had already done a different deer in that space. What to do, what to do?

Imagine my surprise to discover that the scripture in Habakkuk (3:19) was exactly the same as one in 2 Samuel (22:34)!

So I used the page in 2 Samuel for my art and referenced the matching verse in Habakkuk.


Assignment done....well, sorta.

Joyful in Habakkuk
Topic: Bible Journaling

Sometimes, with the right style, one does not need any artwork to evoke the spirit of the verse being highlighted.

Such is the case of this bounce brush lettering in Habakkuk 3:18.


I have a hard time getting the thin lines when I am using a brush marker. So I often write the text with a heavy marker (.08 nib in this case) and then add the wide brush marker to the downstrokes.

Gett in the transitions just right is still hard.

Shine a Light On Micah
Topic: Bible Journaling

The assigned illustration for the book of Micah was the lightbulb. The tutorial for this was done in 2018 originally.

I used colored pencils and fine line markers for this illustration.


A basic italic print style is clear but does not compete with the artwork.

In the Garden With Micah
Topic: Bible Journaling

The Bible page I did in Micah relies just on the beautiful text font without the addition of artwork. Actually, the letters are each a little piece of artwork on their own.


But the important thing is the message in this verse. Nothing has changed. This is still what God requires of us.

Cattails By the River
Topic: Bible Journaling

 I taught a tutorial on drawing cattails a couple of years back for a site that is now a subscription service. I had occasion, however, to use that lesson again for myself to draw the cattails alongside a river for this scripture in Amos.


The original lesson used them as a silhouette but I really like them more when they are colored.

We revisited a font called ROCK for this week's lettering in bible journaling. Our books of the week were Amos and Obadiah so this is the page I did.


It is difficult to use a big block of text with this style though.

The Dandelions Are Back

I think this is the third time I have used dandelions in my bible art. In this case they represent the danger to the harvest.

On the Wings Of a Dove

Next up in the book of Hosea was to use the drawing room lesson for the dove. I hadn't done this drawing for quite a while and never had I done it so large.

 


Although I did not add the scripture reference to this page it is Hosea 11:11.

A Path In Hosea
Topic: Bible Journaling

Today's assignment was to use the font we call 'Path' in our bibles in the book of Hosea.

Yes, the word does appear a few times in that book but they are in a negative light and I try to keep my journaling focused on the positive as much as possible.

So I slanted the focus and use the font but substituted 'way' for 'path' and was happy with the verse I found to use.


I added an illustration for 'following the path/way' and used colored pencils on it.

Daniel Fox
Topic: Bible Journaling

 Our assignment for a drawing to use in the book of Daniel was the Fox.

I did not find a scripture that had any relation to this so I chose one that simply refered to wild animals. I realize he doesn't look terribly wild but it fits the bill and causes one to stop and read the scripture.

This was a new tree structure for me as well.

Power in Daniel
Topic: Bible Journaling

The assigned lettering style to use in Daniel was to be 'power'. This style was actually a combination of two fonts, one that came only in uppercase and one that came only in lowercase. The uppercase letters look like they are constructed of overlapping boards while the lowercase letters look a bit like ribbon.


Many times I combine one of the drawing lessons with the assigned font but in this case they really had nothing in common so I split them into separate pages for treatment.

Sheep of His Pasture

 The assigned drawing to include in Ezekiel was the sheep. Waaaay back when I started making drawing tutorials, a page with six sheep was one of the earliest lessons.

Personally I had never included this version in my Bible so this seemed like a good time to do so.

The original he was modeled from was found on Pinterest a few years back. I don't know the original source.

 

This fella used simple colored pencil work which was then blended with odorless mineral spirits.

Following Ezekiel

In the revisiting of lettering styles from 2018 this is the page that features the "follow' font in the book of Ezekiel.

I like this font best when it is combined with something else that is simpler.


It sort of has the look of a font that might have been used on a sign in the 1950s.

Chained Up

For the drawing page in Lamentations I used the chain. Although chains are mentioned in this book it was not in a context that I wanted to journal around. So I simply used a thought to go with the drawing.

Quiet Lamentations

In journaling through the entire Bible I am now up to the book of Lamentations.

However, two years ago the same font was assigned for the same book so I did not repeat the page Instead, I am just presenting for you the same page I did back then.

 

Don't you think something as lovely as this deserves another viewing?

Covenant Lettering in Jeremiah

I often combine assigned lettering with assigned drawings for my bible journaling. This week I chose to separate them completely and made two separate pages.

The lettering this week is a font called 'covenant' that has a feel of Hebrew writing.

 It is time consuming to write in this style so I used it only for key words ans supplemented with script and printing.


I often condense the text to get the essence of more scripture without writing every single word.

Flowering Branch in Jeremiah

Who has time for housework? I'm busy doing art!

Today it is another bible journaling page. Working on getting something journaled in every book of the bible this year, I am up to Jeremiah.

I used a flowering branch drawing lesson from a couple of years ago to create this page:

I have a set of Prismacolor brush markers that are bright and saturated but do not bleed through bible paper.
