Taking the Lesson to my Bible
Topic: Bible Journaling

All the colored pencil shading and blending I did for online class in the last couple of days culminated in a bible journaling page.

The lesson had us combining the sphere coloring, color blending and use of odorless mineral spirits to create a forest of round trees. I found a place for them in Leviticus.

I added some shadows cast by the tree trunks!

Blending It Out
Topic: Online Class

While I was in the groove from yesterday's class I jumped right in to Lesson 5... Well, that was my intention anyway. Then I discovered that the lesson did not have any worksheets but were intended to use specific stamps. Oh, poo! I don't have any of those stamps.

So I went on the internet and searched for 'how to draw a cartoon bunny' and combined a couple of those to make my own. The trees were simple shapes so I drew those as well. THEN I got to do the coloring we were shown in the class videos.

This lesson was all about blending. I used three colored pencils for each object and blended with odorless mineral spirits.

The final part of this lesson was to do a bible journaling page with the trees, coloring and blending. Since that is a different topic in my blog, I'll share that tomorrow.

Colored Pencil Class
Topic: Online Class

I finally got back into one of the online classes I registered for. This is Colored Pencil Jumpstart and I am up to Lesson 4 - Shading.

First we tackled spheres and eggs, then on to cubes and cylinders. All of them were to learn how to shade differently to demonstrate where the light source was.

Then we learned to identify various shapes in drawings so we could apply the appropriate shading techniques to them to render them in 3D.

Another exercise had us create a 3D colorwheel using shading and blending.

The last worksheet is set up so you can try out lots of color combinations 'just for fun'.

Looking Sharp
Topic: Around the House

Over the course of the time we've been in our house we have seen a wide variety of wildlife hanging about. This hawk is fairly relatively new for us and it has taken us about a year and a half to get a realy good photo.

This is a Sharp Shinned Hawk. We had four of them around for a good part of the summer - hunting in the pasture, sitting in the front yard trees eyeing the squirrel feeders, hanging out on the railing of the deck keeping watch over the bird feeder... These birds feed on smaller birds and sometimes small rodents. We have seen them snatching up a chipmunk!

It is difficult to distinguish these guys from the Cooper's Hawk but, based on size and habits, we're pretty sure we've figured it out.

There is a bird feeder just to his right side so I assume he's waiting for his lunch to arrive!

In the Beginning
Topic: Bible Journaling

Welcome to another year on my blog!

This year, in scripture writing, I am planning to focus on the Names/Attributes of God in order as they are introduced in the Bible. This includes Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Thses scriptures will be written in my Happy Planner and will be my activities for Monday through Friday. I am also planning to do Bible journaling pages around some of these scriptures which will happen on random days.

I picked up some of Shanna Noel's devotionals: 100 Days of... and will use those as my Saturday-Sunday activities. These will sometimes involve art pages and be shared here. I haven't decided which of the three books I bought will be the one I use this year.

I also do Verse Mapping which is scheduled once per week, but not assigned to a specific day.

For the first Bible page of the year, I went to Genesis 1:1 and, focusing on the name itself, I shortened the scripture to read "In the beginning... GOD"

I had a piece of clipart from Creative-Bible-Journaling.com as the starting point. I took out their lettering inside the banner and added the same words back in Old English (Gothic) lettering. I hand drew all of this lettering as well as the GOD (same font) for the bottom of the page.

I added more doodles to the original artwork and then traced all of it into my Bible. The black fill for the letters is all with Prismacolor markers and the coloring on the artwork is Prismacolor Premier colored pencils.

Two Magical Squares
Topic: Quilting

Just by the skin of my teeth I finished these last two quilts within the year - bringing the total to 26, a new high for a single year. These also bring the total I will have donated to our hospital to 99 though these won't be delivered to them for a month or so.

I found the pattern for these in a quilting magazine and it was a totally new concept for me. Start with 4o squares and frame them with sashing and cornerstones on two sides. Set them together in a 5 x 8 layout (leave that one side and top without sashing). From the bottom left corner slice at a 45 degree angle to the right side. Take the resulting bottom triangle and stitch it to the top. You now have a trapezoid. Make another 45 degree angle from side to side and sew the resulting triangles together. Magically you end up with a rectangle again but one in which the squares are all set on point.

I changed the pattern by using wider strips for the sashing and ended up with quilts mesuring 50 x 60 inches.

I really don't like to make a project and then start over and make another just like it. So I let these quilt 'grow up together' step by step. They are made from essentially the same supplies although I did run short on the yellow for the inner border and made it pink (matching the sashing) on the other quilt. Everything was cut together, centers stitched one after the other, border one added to both, outer border added to both and placed on the longarm one after the other on one long backing and batting. Then they were bound one after the other.

The first one throughout all the steps was this one - called First Among Equals (for the process of creating identical quilts in tandem).

With the exception of the yellow cornerstones and border are all from black and blue background calicos and pink daisy fabric from my late sister's stash.

Here's a closeup of the fabrics. It is quilted with a fine yellow thread.

The second quilt I called Save the Last Dance For Me. This was because it was the last one done AND the song was playing on my iPod during the binding process.

The color really isn't as fat as it appears in the photo. Here are the fabrics and you can see the heavier pink thread used for quilting.

The backing was selected to go with the vintage feel of the calicos. It is a parchment colored print with ledger entries in sepia script dated in the 1700s.

That's it! A close to another quilt year in grand fashion.

10 Best of 2020 - Art From the Archives
Topic: Multi-Technique

As I was gathering up my favorite art I had created in 2020 I realized they all fell into one of two categories: Hymn Journaling or Quilting. So instead of going strictly in date order they will be grouped like that here.

First, a synopsis of the overall creative output and milestones for the year:

  • I made and sent 66 cards including birthday, graduation and Christmas
  • I lettered 52 pages of fancy font alphabets
  • I did verse mapping of 53 scriptures
  • I wrote out 365 scripture verses
  • I wrote out lyrics for 66 hymns
  • I did art journaling on 37 hymns in my hymnal
  • I made 93 Bible journaling pages
  • I completed 8 pages in my drawing sketchbook
  • I made 26 quilts - a new record for one year (the last two will be shown tomorrow)
  • Two of the quilts were donated for non-profit auctions. One raised $360 and the other raised $550
  • I brought my total quilt count up to 206 in the 10 years and 4 months I have been making them

My favorite hymn pages of this year are:

Softly and Tenderly - June 10

He is Lord - October 22

I Will Sing Of the Mercies Of the Lord - December 10

Of the quilts I made, these are my favorites:

Converging Daydreams - a new imagining of a Convergence quilt, combining the elements of two planned quilts

Wild Goose Chase - one of 6 quilts I made beginning with orphan blocks from previous projects

Three quilts I made beginning with parts of the same strip sets - Get To the Point, More To the Point, and Point Taken

All-Star Animals - auction quilt for the zoo

Bid Me Goodnight - auction donation for the Edwards Center

All in all it was a very productive year. I have lots of plans and self-challenges for 2021 and you will get to see it all here.

Don't forget to check in tomorrow to see the last two quilts of the year!

Last Load of Lettering
Topic: Lettering

Today I'm sharing the last four font alphabets I did in my planner this year - that's 52 weeks of a new font every week.

The first is this lovely 'crown' lettering.

Next is the 'purity' font

Then it is 'leads'

And, finally, it is 'inherit'

Some of these I did not use on scriptures in my bible as they were 'assigned' in the same book in which I had already used them before.

The Scroll of the Revelation
Topic: Bible Journaling

The assignment for this page was to use a 'scroll' in the book of Revelation. I had taught a scroll in a drawing lesson in 2018 so it was easy to revisit that to create this one.

I used some colored pencils for the shading and a brush marker for the lettering.

All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name
Topic: Hymnal Art

OK, so I maybe went a little overboard on the background color... It almost obliterates the musi.

I combined stickers from a multitude of sources to build this collage of green and gold.

The letters are from two sticker sets, the top and bottom borders are stickers. The gold metallic window and facing doves are from the same brand as well as the gold crosses at the four corners. Another sheet of stickers yielded up the tall crown and my Happy Planner florals provided the arrangement at the base of the window. A clear set of scripture sticker sheets gave me the cross for the center of the window.

The background is all markers.

The top border covers up the title of the hymn on this page where the hymn fills only 2/3 of the sheet.

Hummingbird In My Bible
Topic: Bible Journaling

I taught a tutorial last year on how to draw a hummingbird. At that time I drew it in my Interleaved Bible. This time I added it to my Journal the Word bible.

I used one of my old lettering lessons (fiddlesticks) to write the verse and used colored pencils for the illustration.

Just one more book and the second year of Cover 2 Cover will be complete.

Where He Leads
Topic: Bible Journaling

The assigned font to use was 'leads' but there was no verse that expressly used it so I went with the 'follower' instead. The person walking in truth is definately following.

I used clear Happy Planner stickers to decorate this page after writing the verse in the assigned font.

Moose In The Tree
Topic: Photo

We spent a lot of time this summer watching the clouds overhead, trying to pick out objects as they floated by.

Imagine my surprise as I looked out the window at breakfast and spied this Moose In The Tree!

Now I can't NOT see it.

I Love Jelly
Topic: Quilting

"I Love Jelly" may seem to you like a strange name for a quilt but here goes my reasoning: The quilt is made entirely of jelly roll strips AND it spells out the word 'love'. So there you have it!

As soon as I saw the tutorial for this on the Missouri Star Quilt Company I knew it would be perfect for my granddaughter who just announced her engagement.

The pattern is "Through Love" from Taren Studios and makes a lap quilt of 64x78 inches. Although the pattern is for black, white and a single solid I bought the jelly roll used by MSQC with a rainbow of ombre strips and tried to match the color placements they used as much as possible.

This is definitely best viewed from a distance as the effects of the optical illusion are totally lost at close range.

For the binding I used strips from the backing fabric which is a riot of color called 'Smashing Atoms". So much fun.

On a side note, this is the 24th quilt I have made this year. That is a new record for me - the nearest I have done before was the year I made baby quilts for the mission group at church to take to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. That year I made 23.

I Will Sing Of The Mercies Of The Lord
Topic: Hymnal Art

This is another case where the assigned song was not in my hymnal causing me to decorate a copy from the internet and tip it into the gutter.

From Pinterest I got the idea for the way the staff flows around the treble clef. I added the text using a font 'follow'.

Making dots of color with pastel markers helps to blend one into the other.

When I use these hymns from alternate resources and they include a page number I tip them into my book at the same spot as if they were original to it. I also add them to the index and indicate the page number there.

Here's My Tangled Heart
Topic: Bible Journaling

The heart I did on this page in 1 John is from a tutorial I did in early 2018. The left side of it is constructed by an additive process: The first line is made with shallow scallops, then each of them gets two deep scallops on top. Hearts are added between every other deep scallop and a looped bridge covers the space between the alternates. It is a gradual building of what looks like a complicated design.

In this heart I carried the line into a spiral and finished with a heart 'charm'.

The right side is from a mini-lesson on drawing ribbons.

I used a form of 'architect' lettering for writing the verse on this page.

Bible Typography
Topic: Bible Journaling

In the worksheets I did for the Typography For Bible Journaling class last year I had two that were done for1st John - verses that came one after the other so they were on the same page in my bible.

Putting one on the facing page was not possible as that space already had artwork on it.

So I originally thought I could do one at the top of the page margin and the other at the bottom but one turned out to be drawn too wide for the space. Hmmm.

I did use one in the margin but made the other on a loose piece of paper and used it as a tip-in.

I colored both with the same colors of pastel markers to link them visually.

These are the last two verses from the class(es) that I can use in this bible as all of the spaces where the others would go are being used.

I do have my interleaved bible with plenty of full-sized pages to fill but these are specifically designed for the size of these margins.

I supposed I may get another journaling bible someday with margins to draw in and I can use up the remainder of the drawings in that.

He Leadeth Me
Topic: Hymnal Art

The sheep for this page is one of four I showed how to draw back in 2018. It was one of the first few tutorials I did.

The combination of this art with the hymn is based on the theme of The Good Shepherd.

No way to color a white sheep on a white page so I went with a combination of pastels for a more playful look.

There Is Power In the Blood
Topic: Hymnal Art

The hymn for today is simple in concept and in execution - just two colors of marker and block lettering.

The camera is a little unkind to this page as, in reality, it is solid black and dark red. None of that steakyness shows on the actual page and it does NOT appear to be navy blue and orange!

But, really, the message is conveyed, and that is the important thing.

This is a quote of scripture from Leviticus.

Alphabet Roundup
Topic: Lettering

Here it is, the end of another month. It is time to show the workbook pages for the lettering styles I used in bible journaling this month.

First up is 'promise'

Next is 'pray'

Then we have 'soul'

And, finally, 'listen'

These are all done in my Happy Planner using their dot grid paper.
