There is such satisfaction in doing artwork in my hymnal. I decided to use some fancy lettering for this hymn and liked it so much that I am going to create a lesson to teach this lettering style.
The black lines are Prismacolor marker and I did the letter fills with gold glittery gel pen (Signo brand).

Another assigned hymn to illustrate.
I had in my mind exactly what I wanted and had to search for just the right elements for reference material. I needed a hand (I used a photo of my own), a split rock (found photo on Pinterest) and a flower (which I edited so it looks nothing like the reference photo).

For this hymn I borrowed from one of the Drawing 101 lessons I took a while back. One of the photos we were given to work from was called Dorothy Church and we drew it in pencil - learning aout multi-point perspective.
I used the same building - drawing from my own original drawing, but this time in ink.
Markers were used for the coloring.

With a hymn so familiar to all I wanted an illustration that had a lot of symbolism. I went with the hands of Jesus holding the earth and then turned the earth into a heart.
I references John 3:16 to tie it all together.

This is another hymn assignment that immediately brought an image to mind. I used a similar illustration in my bible quite some time ago with a scripture that refers to the cornerstone.
The original idea for the cross built into the corner was one I saw on Pinterest - I think it was for a conference advertisement but I am no longer sure about that.

I took most of July off from this activity as I did not want to do 4 weeks of patriotic hymns. One was plenty.
When I saw the name of this hymn I immediately thought of the stacked up animals in the children's book: The Bremen Town Musicians. I don't remember what the book was about so no idea how well it fits, but I just wanted that illustration.

I didn't realize how closely the lyrics of the chorus of this hymn reflect the verses in Lamentations3:22-23.
I didn't have any inspiration for illustrating the lyrics so I filled with hand-drawn flowers which I colored with markers.
I love finding little cross-references like this!

Our leader in the group of hymnal artists assigned a whole month of patriotic songs for this week and through the month of July. I want my hymnal to reflect worship more than nationalism so I completed just this one patriotic song.
I created the words with a sticker set. The color bands represent the lyrics (not in order) as 'spacious skies', 'purple mountains majesty', 'amber waves of grain' and ' the fruited plain'.

This hymn is often sung at Christmas - so much that we think of it as a Christmas song. But the lyrics go way beyond that.
this was not included in my hymnal so I decorated a page printed from online. I used markers for the color, brush pen for the blak lettering and white paint pen for the letter outlines and snowcaps.
The completed page was trimmed to size and tipped into the gutter of the song book.

Unlike last weeks hymn, THIS one I recognize!
I went the traditional route of illustrating the word 'fortress' with just that, using a photo as reference and completing the artwork in markers.
I hope nobody ever wants to play the music in my hymnal as it is difficult to read with black lines and coloring all over the page!

Even though this hymn is in my denominational hymnal, I don't think I've ever heard it. Since I don't read music, I have no idea what the tune is. So I went strictly off the lyrics for my art and lettering.
Very simply completed with markers.

In doing art journaling in my hymnal, the next song assigned was For the Beauty of the Earth.
This hymn was not in the book I own so I copied from online. Then I copied over it a print of a collage I did several years ago.
I used yellow highlighter to enhance some of the art that was already yellow to punch up the color a bit. Then I continued by highlighting the title and a bit of the lyrics.
The completed page was cut to size and tipped into the gutter of the hymnal.

I was ar a Bible Journaling Retreat and we all got lots of goodies donated by companies and the leaders. I gained a couple of sets of alphabet stickers among my new treasures.
Then the assignment came to decorate the song 'Trust and Obey' in our hymnals.
I started with the block letter stickers but soon realized that they were not a consistent size so they looked a little sloppy. I pulled out the second set of letters which were in a combatible color and of letters on little dots.
So I placed matching letters in random places, stacked on top. Still not quite right so I outlined all the stickers in fine line black pen. That's better!
I had matching strips of border stickers which I employed as divider elements and outlined those as well.
I used gold peel-off sticker trim at the top and bottom as a finale.

Monday means it's time to show another decorated song in my hymnal. This is such a fun new craft.
The assigned hymn this week is Onward Christian Soldiers. I remember how we used this to march in Vacation Bible School when moving between activities!
I traced an image I had painted durint the 31 Days of Watercolor Painting last July.
This time I used colored pencils for the coloring medium.

Amazing how many of these hymns we've been assigned that are not in the hymnal I am using. I remember singing them as a kid but, somewhere along the way, somebody decided they didn't need to be in the book any more. Harumph!
I end up finding a printable copy online and adjusting the size so it will fit into the hymnal I have. I do the art and coloring before I trim it down and glue it into the gutter.
I found a clip-art image to guide me in the features of this lady's face.
Her hair is all original! This is colored in pencils.

Mostly, when I can't think of an image that illustrated a scripture or a song, the easiest thing to do is flowers.
For this Easter hymn I decided to do lilies like the ones I taught in the Drawing Room lesson last year.
But once I got to the stage of coloring I decided to color like stargazer lilies because they have the most beautiful pink streaks and fascinating dots on the petals.
I used these on the hymn with colored pencils as the medium.
These came out exactly how I envisioned them!

For our hymnal art this week we were assigned Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, a celebration of Easter.
I was carried along by all of those Aleluias at the end of every phrase!
I used principles learned in the Whimsical Sketching class to combine flowers that I have taught in the Drawing Room at creative-bible-journaling.com.

I used a wide gray line on the left and bottom of each element to make them raise off the page.

I am sticking with the Easter themed songs this month and it was time for another old favorite... 'He Lives'.
I gave my page a stylized figure, singing praises to accompany some handwritten lyrics.
I have a couple ore ideas on this theme to complete the month.

This week the decorated hymn assigned was 'Because He Lives'.
First, let me say that I was stunned to find that this hymn was NOT in my book! WHAT?!?!? I had to find the sheet music online, resize it and cut it out to tip in. When I do this, I put it where the page number says it should go and then I add it to my hymnal index.
I went with a straight-up resurrection theme for my drawing and did all the coloring in markers.
I took some of what I learned in the class Typography For Bible Journaling and applied those principles for the lettering.
I did the tipin with just a fine line of glue at the inner edge and closed the book to dry.

This is reported to be the hymn that the largest percentage of people list as their favorite.
The concept for this crown of thorns is one I developed a couple of years ago and used in my Bible. But I like this version much more than the original.
The use of the nails to form crosses and to stand in for the thorns says so much.
I used the same technique for the wood on the cross that I usually do - draw in the wavy lines with a medium dark colored pencil. Then color over everything with a medium light colored pencil.
I used a script lettering for the lyrics up the left edge.
