S is for Stencils
Topic: A-Z round 1

This is the first time I have used a stencil like this. I taped it to the cardstock and used an old plastic card to apply dimensional paint and scrape it level. The stencil was removed immediately so the paint dried with soft edges.

The paint was irridescent so I applied it to the card corners with a fingertip, then punched with a corner punch and a corner inset punch. The oval was cut out with my Coluzzle and a picture affixed before mounting on blue cardstock.

R is for Rubber Stamping
Topic: A-Z round 1

I stamped the little quilt using Adriondack in a brown tone. I colored it with colored pencils and it was a little too stark on the white cardstock. So I brayered Ranger's Distressing ink pad in "Old Paper" over the whole surface and cut it out. The colorful green/blue border is scrapbook paper. 

Mounting this on tan cardstock I then placed stickers at the top and bottom.

Q is for Quick
Topic: A-Z round 1

This quick card is made from two advertising elements (globe and books) on folded brown cardstock. Two strips of torn  scrapbook paper frame the sides. Then I used some 'postal' rub-ons from 7gypsies. The label that looks like metal is actually  foam-mounted plastic. It says "journey".

P is for Pockets
Topic: A-Z round 1

I used a stitching sticker for the front of this card and the fabric text stickers give a hint as to what one might find inside. 

The center folder is stitched inside the card which is folded with a double wide spine. The folder is made from a single sheet of double-sided 12 x 12 scrapbook paper. The folder instructions were gleaned from a Tim Holtz DVD.

 

These are only two of the four pockets that the folder presents. The intent would be to fill them with gift cards, lottery tickets, cash or anything else one might wish to present as a gift.

O is for Oval
Topic: A-Z round 1

Although you will recognize the diamond printed vellum from yesterday's napkin card, this card started with an oval tag. With the tag in hand I went around the studio, finding an item and adding it then looking for the next. When I work this way, without gathing all the elements first, I am as surprised by the outcome as anyone.

This is the order in which I found and added elements: oval, ribbon roses, punched leaves, blue fabric flowers, gold flower centers, vellum, ribbon, outer brackets, inner brackets.

N is for Napkins
Topic: A-Z round 1

I used my Xyron to apply a layer of adhesive to the already-folded card front. Then I applied just the top layer of a dinner napkin and trimmed it up.

The image was just too bright so I found the light weight vellum with a very faint diamond  print and cut it to fit. I ran this through the Xyron for adhesive and sealed directly to the surface of the napkin. I burnished it well to seal.

Because of the elegant and subdued feel of this card I make it a sympathy card with a peel-off.

M is for Mask
Topic: A-Z round 1

I had an idea to make a Mardi Gras mask and this is the result. I designed a stitching pattern using CorelDraw and stitched it out using metallic Sulky threads in green, purple and gold.  

I added sequins with green/purple beads and then stitched on coordinating ribbons with the same sequind and beads.

L is for Lace
Topic: A-Z round 1

Brown paper lace on a light rose paper sets the tone for this card. I added a cream ribbon with brown dots and three printed die-cut butterflies. The butterflies are mounted with the bodies glued down and the wings held aloft by silicone glue underneath.

K is for Kids
Topic: A-Z round 1

This illistration began as a French laundry soap ad on a collage sheet. The off-center mat is really a moss green and is backed with a blue/gree/yellow striped scrapbook paper. I added peel-off stars to mimic those in the graphic and then a few tiny ones in the boy's sky. 

The final touch was two fabric text stickers.

I is for Icicles
Topic: A-Z round 1

Today I decided to create some digital art. These window scenes are created in three layers: the winter scene, the icicles, and the window frame.

 


I think the thrid one is my favorite.

They will be printed directly onto cardstock, creased at the top of the window and trimmed to make cards.

H is for Herbs
Topic: A-Z round 1

On this scene of pots and herbs I treated the plant a little differently. I used fine scissors and 'fringed' the edges of each branch of the stalks and 'fluffed' them with a fingertip. The stalks are then only glued at the center. It gives a nicer effect to the 3D scene. 

I also really curled the pots before gluing them down. They are glued with depth at their centers and flush at their edges.

I added lots of layers to frame out the litle scene and added a fabric text sticker to the top corner.

G is for Gift-wrap

F is for Fifties
Topic: A-Z round 1

I had a brilliant idea in the middle of the night and this fifties 'Rockola' jukebox is the result. For this I plowed through my drawer called 'wow papers' and found all kinds of sparkly stuff. I trimmed it up with mesh, peel-offs, stickers and such. 

For the inside I made little 45 records with two hole punches and a hole reinforcement.

E is for Elegant

D is for Distressing
Topic: A-Z round 1

Distressing is not something I do very often in my artwork. But it is on my assigned list so...

This lady is a 3D sheet although I did not cut it as assigned. The background is from the same set and came with the fan affixed. I used an Adriondack inkpad direct-to-paper to distress the edges before mounting on a scrapbook paper with a crackle finish.

C is for Corrugated
Topic: A-Z round 1

It is just coincidence that C is for Christmas as well as for Corrugated! I didn't plan to start making Christmas cards this early! I had the red corrugated cardstock and when I went through my supplies I found several premade 3D tags and embellishments that someone gave me. They happened to be related to Christmas, so this is where I ended up. 

To this one I added some epoxy stickers for a finishing touch.

 

I had fun making this fireplace to hang my tag with stocking.  I scored the corrugated stock to give the impression of bricks and finished with peel-off gifts on the mantle and the greeting.

A panel of corrugated stock was torn to make a top and bottom element. The three ornament stickers were hung from the upper block and a couple of bitty holly stickers frame the top. I used a fine-line watercolor marker to draw a broken border all around.

B is for Buckle
Topic: A-Z round 1

I chose 'buckle' for B but I didn't have a buckle! I made this one out of a label mount and some wire. I selected the ribbon because it was the only one I had in the size to fit the buckle!

I then designed a card to fit the colors of the ribbon. The dress is cut out of a printed scrapbook paper and the ribbon wrapped and attached (using silicon). I used watercolor markers to draw on a few styling details and added coordinating brads for buttons.

The completed piece is then glued to a text-printed scrapbook paper and then onto a card front. The final piece is the text sticker placed on the 'hemline'

A is for Applique
Topic: A-Z round 1

The self-challenge is off and running! For the first-round A entry I chose 'applique'.

This piece is overall about 9.5 inches square. I began with 4 scrapbook papers in plaids resembling fabrics and cut two hearts out of each using my Coluzzle. These I arranged in a circle on a sheet of scrapbook paper with a quilted fabric print. In the center I arranged a triangle of each print, overlapping as needed.

I used a white gel pen to create 'stitches' on each patch, with a different stitch for each color.

I cut the piece down to a square and mounted on sturdy cardboard. I cut an aperture in a final pattern of paper and adhered it overlapping the outside edges of the square. I used a purple gel pen to mark out stitching around this binding.

This piece was then wrapped to the back using a bookbinding corner process. A final piece was cut to 'line' the back of the panel.

The final step was to install eyelets at the two corners and tie on a length of green plaid ribbon for hanging.
